The SDA Research Lab is an internship program centred on research, reflection and social purpose. Run from our Sydney Studio in Epping, it provides emerging architects with the space and mentorship to investigate real questions about how architecture influences lives and communities. Each participant is supported by experienced architects who value thoughtful enquiry and the shared pursuit of meaningful knowledge.
The program builds on Stanton Dahl’s belief that architecture is never neutral. Research in the Lab seeks to understand not only how spaces function, but how they affect wellbeing, dignity and belonging. Participants explore provocations such as how dignity can survive cost-cutting, how invisible needs like loneliness can be addressed, or what it means to design with honour in a profit-driven industry. These questions invite curiosity, courage and compassion as they deepen both professional and human insight.
Through structured investigation, collaboration and peer review, students contribute to a growing body of research that informs practice across Stanton Dahl’s specialties. The work developed in the Lab strengthens our collective understanding of the social value of architecture and inspires a new generation of architects who see research as a tool for impact.
Over five weeks, students will join our team for two days a week, exploring a focused research question aligned with our practice areas.
Working in pairs and guided by experienced architects, participants will:
Define and develop a research question connected to socially driven design
Engage in analysis, synthesis and presentation of findings
Learn to communicate insights with clarity and purpose
Present a 2,000-word research paper and visual presentation at the program’s close
Research topics are drawn from real-world challenges across Stanton Dahl’s projects, ensuring each investigation connects to practice and people.
Applications are open to students enrolled in a recognised Master of Architecture program at an Australian university.
Preference will be given to those in their final year, though first-year Master’s students are also welcome to apply.
