Social Housing Dwellings ready for Residents as Population Grows in Penrith

  • Land & Housing Corporation delivers another seven affordable housing dwellings in Greater Western Sydney

    Penrith, a suburb in Greater Western Sydney that is under continual growth and development as our population increases will now have an additional seven affordable dwellings designed by Stanton Dahl Architects. With a prime location opposite Penrith South Public School and only minutes away to the Westfield Shopping Centre, commercial precinct and Penrith train station; these new dwellings which were completed this April now occupy a site which originally contained three dilapidated single storey fibro dwellings.

    The development was designed to look like a small housing estate rather than a collection of social housing units via the implementation of a variety of external building material finishes and colours to break up an otherwise monotone palette commonly associated with traditional social housing developments. Taking advantage of the attic space also assisted in our approach by allowing us to reduce visual bulk by not introducing a second storey, a practice not common for Land & Housing Corporation developments.

    The attached 2-bedroom General Housing dwellings along the Jamison Road streetscape appear single storey to match the surrounding dwellings in the area and each addresses the Jamison Road directly via a private pathway and fence. The three dwellings in the rear of the site are a mix of two 1-bedroom and a 3-bedroom Liveable unit. Each dwelling in this development as its own single car lockable garage. The Liveable units in the rear, along with all the garages for each unit, are accessed via a communal driveway. This driveway wraps behind the attached dwellings at the front of the site so that it is hidden from view when seen from Jamison Road.

    By the use of carefully selected landscaped elements coupled with the implementation of various building material finishes as well as feature colours, we believe that the new development fits well in its context and will lay precedent for newer developments that will slowly take place of the existing single storey fibro clad dwellings that are still common place in this area.
