  • Roof deck and plant level slab now being poured at new student housing building at Morling College, Macquarie Park

The last post tensioned slab for the roof deck and service plant level above level 7 at the new ‘Saunders Village’ Student Housing building was poured on Thursday this week. This milestone means the build remains on track for a completion in May 2016. The student lounge and multipurpose spaces are beginning to emerge with the level 1 air conditioning units, kitchen exhaust ducts and much of the drainage pipework installed. The substantial steel beams supporting the level 2 formwork (sourced from a bridge in Victoria off ebay) have served their purpose and will soon be removed, Due to the weight of these support beams and the lack of crane access, each beam will be rolled out on tubes by hand so that they can be removed on flatbed trucks.

This new student housing block known as ‘Saunders Village’ will be a 100 bed residential facility that replaces outdated onsite student housing and provides contemporary, flexible housing for a variety of student types whilst still maintaining the efficiencies of modular design principles.

Over the past ten years, Stanton Dahl have been working closely with Morling College to assist them in developing a strategy to use their land assets to best facilitate the College’s goals and vision and through this process a new independent student housing block was designed and construction is well underway.

‘Saunders Village’ will provide facilities that exceed Morling College’s requirements by allowing additional housing stock to be offered to Macquarie University and other surrounding entities. This will help to foster ‘connection points’ that form part of the College’s vision. ‘Saunders Village’ will be a distinctive residential building for the campus that will address its programmatic and architectural context and provides a facility of high quality.
